During this year’s Oscars, Kerry Washington drew a plethora of plaudits for her pregnancy-appropriate ensemble. Her couture dress and diamond earrings may be out of reach, but if you wear long hair, Kerry’s elegant take on the archetypal half up, half down hair ‘do can be yours with a few products and tools, tips and tricks. The beauty of this style is that it keeps your locks off the face, yet retains the feminine appeal of tresses tumbling down the back. Plus it’s formal enough for special events, casual enough for brunches and lunches. For styling tips, click notes.
Step 1: Shampoo and condition and blow-dry hair in hands, using a few sprays of protective thickening lotion to shield against heat, add light texture and hold.
Step 2: From ear to ear, make a parting, splitting the hair into two sections: front and back. Mist the whole of the back section liberally with set and style spray. Curl the whole of the back section with an iron or wand. Allow to cool and brush out the curls, blending them together for a tumbling cascade of wave and curl.
Step 3: Release the front section and part into two sections; part slightly off of center on your favorite side. Brush both these sides through to the back and use pins to fasten, on or just above the occipital bone. Finish with primp for hold and shine.
